“Incarnation is the oldest Christian story. Through Christ, God is pouring God's self into all creation. To be Christian, then, is to see Christ in every thing.”
—Fr. Richard Rohr
Rohr's
The Universal Christ
is one of the most profound books I've read. It offers a profoundly redemptive view of Christ, not in some other-worldly realm, but in the material world that we inhabit on Earth. It also sheds light on the relationship between Jesus and Christ (as Rohr says in the book, Christ wasn't Jesus's last name).
This course contains two modules (both audio and text) per week with reflection questions, guided meditations, and perspectives from yours truly, Jonas Ellison. Also included are two live online video conference calls to discuss the book in a group.
  • Well, hello...

Thanks for swinging by. Since you're here, I'm guessing you're wondering who I am and what I do.

For over twenty years, I lived in the vast, unscripted space outside the church. I was a direct marketing copywriter, a seeker of "high-vibe" spirituality, and a professional observer of the human experience. I spent a long time looking for the "secret" to life in the self-help aisles and the toxic positivity of the Law of Attraction, only to find that grace usually waits for us at the bottom of the ladder, not the top.

I eventually found my way back to the "bells and smells" of ancient liturgy, finding a home in a tradition that’s expansive enough for my doubts and earthy enough for my actual life. I’m a Lutheran* priest now, but I still don't speak "Christianese" particularly well. I’m more interested in the thin places where the sacred meets the mundane—the fog of the California Central Coast, the grit of a Tuesday morning, and the holy mischief hidden in our unpolished (or often over-polished) stories.

Whether you’re a skeptic, a seeker, or just tired of the performative nature of our culture in the Western world, I’m here as a spiritual cartographer. I don't have a map to a perfect life, but I’m fairly good at spotting the light coming through the cracks. I live in Aptos, California, where I try to practice what I preach: that the extraordinary is almost always hiding in the highly unlikely.

*My particular Lutheran flavor: The ELCA
