Essentially, the death of God is the death of salvific foundation. From anything we think can save us from the lack and the longing that gnaws at us in the background of our endless distractions.
So, the death of God can also mean…
The death of being saved by a famous college.
The death of being saved by wealth.
The death of being saved by a healthy environment.
The death of being saved by a moral legal system.
The death of being saved by a strong moral church.
The death of being saved by our good looks.
The death of being saved by a romantic partner or sexual conquests.
The death of being saved by democracy (or communism, fascism, etc.).
The death of being saved by technology.
The death of being saved by knowledge.
The death of being saved by perfect parenting strategies.
I could go on (and on). So, in this way, the death of God/salvific foundation is absolutely as relevant as it was when we hung our salvific foundation on a cross outside of Jerusalem 2,000 years ago.
The good news is, it’s out of the death of God that resurrection springs forth. We find our true salvation when our false idols of salvation die. Again and again.
