Put on Christ

Throughout the New Testament (particularly in Paul’s letters), Christ is described as something we ‘wear’ or ‘put on’. Christ is something we’re ‘clothed’ and ‘bathed’ in.

As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Galatians 3:27

Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Romans 13:14

I find this to be a helpful image. It’s far more helpful than a set of impossible morals and/or beliefs that we have to adopt.

This Christ-ness is something that exists outside of us but that we can grab and put on. In Christ, we lose our false identity and become one with God. It’s like we’re becoming something/someone else entirely without having to manually change one iota of ourselves. It’s a weird thing to describe.

When I’m in moments of despair, it’s comforting to know that I can simply reach over (internally), and put on Christ. When I do that, I become something/someone else entirely but I’m still the same… Me.

Grace & Godspeed,
Jonas
