People who are spiritually inclined are quick to discount the body and put a high value on stuff of the mind and spirit. If I don’t force myself outside or into bodily activities, I’ll sit with a book or in front of a screen, reading and writing about spiritual things for hours and hours. Even when I’m meditating, I’m kind of going through an out-of-body experience.
Early Christians made a concerted effort to hammer home the fact that Jesus had a body. Gnosticism, the heresy they were up against, wanted to escape the body. They saw it as a limitation. The goal for them was to transcend the body by gaining special knowledge.
I think our whole Western culture is gnostic in this way. Not many of us practice capital-G Gnosticism. But our work and our daily lives are more disembodied than ever.
Christians countered by (among other things) beginning the gospel of John with “The Word became flesh.” Fleshiness - having a body - is good in Christianity. God didn’t save us by removing us from the world of bodies and materiality. He entered into it and redeemed it.
Bodies are good
and very good.
