It’s easy to overemphasize doing and underemphasize becoming. We live in a ‘doing’ culture. The question haunts us throughout childhood, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It suggests an end goal as the only aim. This is such a static and tiring way to live.
Things get interesting when we step into a posture of becoming. Your becomingness starts on day one and continues as long as you do it. You’re not an expert guitarist, but you’re becoming a guitarist. You haven’t learned Japanese yet, but you’re becoming someone who speaks Japanese.
A life of becoming ushers you into a world where you’re not restlessly waiting for the next goal to be completed. You’re just basking in doing it and becoming more and more you while you do so.
