Looking around, it’s hard to deny that we’ve created a dog-eat-dog world.
Out west, our economics are based on it. Our military is based around it. Our social structures are built upon it. The way we traditionally see relationships stem from it. Even how we talk to ourselves is rooted in this notion.
Survival of the fittest, right?
That’s how we get to the top.
And so, it is.
A self-fulfilling prophecy.
It’s written in the Bible that the wolf lays down with the lamb, the leopard with the goat, and the lion with the calf (not sure who started the rumor that the ‘lion lays with the lamb’, but they were apparently sacrificing truth for alliteration…).
As a young man hearing this parable, I took it as a command to be weak. Like, oh, in order to live a ‘spiritual’ life, I guess I just have to let people walk on me. Psssht.
But now I see it as the preeminent sign of humanity. The epitome of strength and finely tuned emotional intelligence.
We… Are human.
Hear us roar.
Now, a lion may not actually be able to lay down with a calf without devouring it. The lion is driven by instinct. Yes, it’s a lot more cut and dry for the lion. I mean, I don’t hate the lion for munching on that calf. That lion has to live.
THE HUMAN IS DIFFERENT FROM THE LION IN THAT WE CAN OVERRIDE OUR INSTINCTS AND CHOOSE SOMETHING NEW. WE CAN LIVE FROM OUR HEARTS, NOT MERELY OUR SURVIVAL INSTINCTS.
We have the capacity for so much more. Our creative minds can set up structures that work for all. That take even people in the most vulnerable of positions in life as a priority.
So, how about you? Can the lion lay down with the calf in your reality? Can you make your world something other than a dog-eat-dog one?
Because if you can, there’s no reason this whole thing can’t change.
- See where you may be blindly following your survival instincts.
- Realize that, if you’re acting from survival-based instinct, you’re not truly ‘acting’, you’re merely ‘reacting’ to a prehistoric impulse.
- Wonder what it would look like if you were to let your heart lead you in that situation? How might the outcome be different?
- Realize it’s possible. Not only is it possible, but it’s what makes you human.
