  • To enter into the realm of contemplation, one must in a certain sense die: but this death is, in fact, the entrance into a higher life.

  • Some things about me

Hey, I'm Jonas. I'm a writer, a husband, a father, a friend, a foe, and a lot of other things that aren't relevant here.

I guess you could call me a dime store lay theologian, but my main task these days is to spread the word about my guiding light - contemplative prayer based in the Christian Wisdom tradition.

As someone who's going through discernment to enter ELCA Lutheran seminary in mid-life and who struggles daily with the complexities inherent in life and faith, it's my only saving grace (quite literally).

    About the whole Christian thing

I confess; I am a Christian. But that's a big loaded word. Here are the particulars of where I'm coming from, personally...

    • It doesn't matter to me whether or not you proclaim Jesus (or any icon, for that matter) your personal Lord and savior. I see Jesus as someone to follow, not someone to worship. I'm more Christian than I am Jesusian.
    • My faith is more contemplative (based on my lived experience of the divine) than Biblical (based on scripture).
    • Politically, I'm too liberal to call myself a conservative and too conservative to call  myself a liberal.
    • I believe in climate change, am a big fan of science, and think God works through evolution.
    • I'm enamored with traditional liturgy.
    • I can't stand Christian Rock or 'worship music'. Give me old American hymns, choir, and chamber music any day.
    • I think we need more women, people with various shades of skin, and LGBTQ+ folks as clergy. The world is so tired of white straight dudes like me behind the pulpit (hopefully there's a little more room, though).
    • I often get along with atheists better than I do with fundamentalist Christians (because the God that many of them don't believe in, I find that I don't believe in either).

All of this being said, I'm a terribly flawed human who's drunk on power and self-righteousness just like the next. I get it wrong most of the time and only stand a chance because of God's grace that acts as the ground of human beingness.

Work featured here consists of personal essays, articles on faith and life, and whatever miscellany tumbles into my head that I think you might enjoy hearing about.

My wife and I live in Chicago with our perfectly behaved daughter and well-trained Shih-Tzu Terrier where we somehow make a living being far lazier than our ancestors.

"I truly love everything you post... It’s a rare thing for me to find that in any one author, but you have a knack for getting it right almost every time!"

"Jonas, your writings almost always make my day. Into Evernote (my diary) they go. And I absolutely laud your humor, friend. It’s so what the world needs now."
